Blind Faith in Strangers

I’m sure that those who call themselves “advisors” are trustworthy. After all, they have certificates and seem intelligent. However, I failed to take the time to do thorough research and ask questions to understand what they were doing.

Consequently, I entrusted my hard-earned money to strangers, hoping for positive outcomes. Regrettably, I became a target of scams and deception, which greatly endangered my financial stability and the welfare of my family and me.

What to do: Conduct thorough research, ask questions, and verify credentials before trusting anyone with your finances. Stay involved and informed about your investments.

I Don’t Need to Learn Anything

I know what I’m doing. I know I’m right; the investment will come back, and what goes down must come back up. Avoiding information and perspectives that differ from what you believe to be true creates huge blind spots.

The truth is that by failing to acknowledge our weaknesses and disregarding differing perspectives, we risk losing everything.

Willful Ignorance

My spouse handles the family finances. They know what they’re doing, so I do not need to get involved. Putting all your faith in your spouse and not making yourself aware of what’s happening by not asking questions or looking for signs is a recipe for disaster.

Assuming everything is well is different from knowing everything is well.

Dealing with the stress of financial health and well-being for an entire family is a lot of pressure for one person. This creates the risk of waking up one day alone, only to discover your golden years lack the gold and abundance you had envisioned.

What to do: Both partners should be involved in family finances. Regularly communicate about money matters, ask questions, and stay informed to ensure a shared understanding.

Too Busy

I don’t have time now, but I can always get to it later. Life is just too busy right now. Procrastination invites tragedy when you’re unprepared. The time you thought you had, you didn’t, and now your life is a mess.

What to do: Prioritize financial planning and make time for it. Recognize that neglecting your finances now can lead to more significant problems later.

Buying Love

Giving your kids everything they want. I want to set my kids up for life. I’ll use money as a parenting tool because money can buy love and happiness. I feel guilty because I didn’t give them enough attention. This results in invalidating your family, destroying everything you hoped to build, and the only thing that remains are painful memories.

Your good intentions destroyed your kids’ will, robbed them of prosperity, and killed their ambition. Money cannot buy love and happiness.

What to do: Understand that true love and happiness come from quality time, attention, and guidance, not material gifts. Set healthy boundaries and teach children the value of hard work and responsibility.

Addiction

I’m in control. I’m invincible. I don’t need to be careful because nothing will hurt me. In reality, they are failing to acknowledge the long-term risks of alluring substances. They end up getting caught up in a web of drugs and alcohol and lose everything.

What to do: Seek professional help to address underlying issues and build a support system. Prioritize health and long-term well-being over short-term highs.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

I know what I’m doing, and I’ll make more money. They say if I don’t jump in now, I’ll lose out on these opportunities and not look cool to my friends and family. This belief causes them to spend money like there is no tomorrow, resulting in a broken bank account.

What to do: Avoid impulsive financial decisions driven by fear or social pressure. Stick to a well-researched investment strategy aligned with your goals and risk tolerance.

Naive Optimism

I have a brilliant idea. I want people to see me as accomplished. They say the more we spend on this idea, the more we’re going to make. They relentlessly throw money on an idea with little thought or analysis. They focus on image instead of substance.

This behavior leads to failed businesses and damaged financial futures because they fail to consider all relevant factors and possible outcomes.

What to do: Conduct thorough research and analysis before investing in any idea. Focus on creating a solid business plan and be realistic about potential challenges.

Living in a Bubble

My company will take care of me. As long as I have my job, I will be fine. They decide not to think or plan for “what if “scenarios. Thinking nothing can go wrong, they take unnecessary risks.

They wake up to a perfect storm, discovering too late that everything they counted on was an illusion.

What to do: Diversify your income streams and always have a backup plan. Continuously assess risks and adjust your financial strategies accordingly. Don’t rely on any single source of income or support.

Many people point to a handful of Bible stories to argue that God changes his mind — the golden calf, Jonah and Nineveh, Sodom and Gomorrah, Hezekiah’s added years, David’s census, Amos’s visions. I don’t think that’s actually what’s happening in any of these accounts. A few things need to be considered first.

Conditional Promises

A lot of God’s promises and principles are conditional. Scripture is full of if-then statements from God, and some of what he says comes with an expiration date built in.

Nowhere is this stated more directly than Jeremiah 18:7-10, where God tells Jeremiah that whenever he announces he will uproot or destroy a nation, if that nation turns from its evil, he will relent of the disaster he intended — and the reverse is true too: whenever he announces he will build up a nation, if it does evil, he will relent of the good he intended to do.

This isn’t God changing his mind. This is God stating, in advance, the terms on which his pronouncements operate.

Not every example states its condition as plainly as Jeremiah 18 does with if-then statements. Genesis 6:6 and Exodus 32 don’t spell one out, but an inference can be made from them — it’s not stated as directly.

God also invites us to intercede on behalf of others. Intercession is one of the ways we partner with him to bring about his will on earth.

When God was about to investigate what was happening in Sodom, he told Abraham, and Abraham interceded on behalf of the people. Abraham asked, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?” Then he asked whether God would spare the city if righteous people could be found there — fifty, then all the way down to ten.

Each time, God said he would spare the city on that condition, but ultimately not even ten righteous people were found. Still, God rescued Lot and members of his family before destroying Sodom and Gomorrah.

This wasn’t God changing his mind. This was God responding and collaborating with Abraham in real time, according to terms he himself set.

Numbers 23:19 puts it plainly:

“God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?”

I don’t believe God changes his mind; I believe our understanding of him changes as we grow closer to him. Sometimes it may appear as though he changed his mind, but that is not what is going on beneath the surface.

God Delegates Authority

God doesn’t only respond to us — he delegates real decisions to us and to other spiritual beings. That’s not him changing his mind. It’s part of how he set things up from the start.

Job 1-2 gives us a glimpse of this. The “sons of God” present themselves before the Lord, and the Adversary is among them. God permits him to test Job, within limits God himself sets.

We don’t get to see everything discussed in that council, and I think that’s part of the point — we don’t always know what’s going on in the spiritual realm. Decisions are being made at a level we’re not privy to.

The fact that we can’t see it doesn’t mean God is scrambling to respond to something new; it means there’s a whole dimension of governance Scripture only occasionally pulls back the curtain on.

Daniel 10 makes this even more explicit. An angel tells Daniel that “the prince of the kingdom of Persia” opposed him for twenty-one days, until Michael — described as one of the chief princes, with responsibility over Daniel’s own people — came to help him break through.

The angel had been sent the moment Daniel started praying; the delay wasn’t God hesitating, it was real resistance playing out in a realm Daniel couldn’t see.

That’s delegated responsibility, assigned to spiritual beings and carried out over time, in a conflict God didn’t need to explain to Daniel until the angel finally arrived to tell him.

The same pattern shows up with people. In 1 Kings 17-18, Elijah declares there will be no rain except by his word, and later calls down fire on Mount Carmel.

That’s delegated authority — a decision God let a man make and carry out on his behalf, not a moment where God had to catch up to what Elijah chose to do.

None of this is a license to wave off whatever in Scripture feels hard to square with a settled God. If a text says God regretted something, or relented, or was moved by intercession, I take that at face value — the point isn’t that we get to discount what’s written because we can’t see the whole picture behind it.

It’s the opposite: the limits of what we know should push us to dig deeper into the text, not past it, and to hold what we don’t fully understand with more humility and more grace toward people who read it differently than we do.

None of this makes God passive or uncertain. It means his sovereignty includes real participation — from angels, from prophets, from us. Some of what looks like God changing course is actually him working through agents he has given real decisions to, within a plan he already holds. Delegating decisions isn’t a risk to his character — it’s evidence he trusts that character enough to let others act within it.

Partnering With God

God doesn’t set us up to fail so a better plan can take over. When we get something wrong, he doesn’t discard the relationship for a version of us that didn’t mess up — he works with where we actually are.

That’s what makes it a partnership rather than a script we’re acting out. Keep cooperating with him, and he keeps finding a way toward what he wants, even through what we got wrong along the way.

That’s different from him changing his mind or his will. His will doesn’t move. What moves is the shape of our cooperation with it, and he stays in it with us rather than steering us toward a predetermined stumble.

Regret Isn’t Reversal

1 Samuel 15 is actually a good place to see this held in tension within a single chapter.

God tells Samuel, “I regret that I made Saul king” (v. 11), and the same statement is repeated in verse 35. But just a few verses later, Samuel tells Saul that “the Glory of Israel will not lie or change his mind, for he is not a man, that he should change his mind” (v. 29). The same writer puts both statements back to back without treating them as a contradiction.

That tells me these two things are operating on different levels — regret over an outcome is not the same thing as an unstable, reversible will. God can grieve what a person’s freedom led to without that grief meaning his purpose wavered.

That distinction matters more than it might first seem. Sometimes we regret things that still needed to happen.

Regret isn’t the same as reversal — not liking an outcome is not the same as changing your mind about it. I also think “God changed his mind” is sometimes used, without people realizing it, as a way to explain away things we don’t fully understand about what God is doing or has done. It’s an easier answer than sitting with the tension.

Different Tools, Same Goal

A simple example: someone working on a car may use a single tool to fix it. As the car responds to that work, it changes, and now the mechanic needs a different tool to address the new circumstances.

The mechanic never changed his mind about fixing the car — only the means changed to match what the situation now called for. Different situations call for different responses.

God and Time

As for how this fits with God and time — I think the appearance of God responding to us in sequence is on the human side.

We have limited knowledge; we experience things one moment after another, and so that’s how we perceive God’s interaction with us. But I do believe God is able to step in and out of time as he pleases.

He isn’t bound the way we are, and he doesn’t need to wait to see what we’ll do before he can respond.

Character Doesn’t Change, Responses Do

The other issue with the statement “God changes his mind” is that it can undermine his trustworthiness — if God changes his mind about one thing, what’s stopping him from changing his mind about anything else?

Scripture calls us to be unwavering in our faith and warns against being double-minded. Jesus calls the church not to be lukewarm and indecisive. If that’s true of what he desires for us, how much more is it true of himself.

Consider a parent who disciplines a child gently, then firmly, then differently again as the child responds — that adaptability isn’t instability or arbitrariness; it’s a sign of engaged wisdom, not its absence. The same is true of God. His character and his ultimate purpose don’t change. His responses do.

Malachi 3:6 says, “For I, Yahweh, don’t change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.” God’s purpose is his original intent. Things were good in the garden until they weren’t.

His desire for humanity to be in relationship with him has not changed — but the means by which that’s accomplished has. God is not arbitrary in his choices.

He is a loving, intentional God, responding to real circumstances without ever wavering from who he is or where he’s ultimately taking things.

Jesus Reveals the Heart of God

Jesus reveals the fullness of God’s character and nature.

We don’t always understand God’s ways, but Jesus gives us insight into understanding and contextualizing the heart of God.

Whatever we can’t fully explain in a particular story or response, we have somewhere to anchor it — the character Jesus showed us is the same character at work all along.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked the Father if there was another way: “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me.” That wasn’t him backing out of reconciling the world back to God.

He checked whether an easier path existed, and then he went to the cross anyway. Jesus is applying wisdom in prayer.

His mission never wavered; he asked whether something different could be done to achieve the same result, and he brought that moment honestly to the Father rather than pretending it didn’t cost him anything.

That’s what was actually happening with the golden calf, with Nineveh, with Hezekiah’s fifteen extra years — not a God rewriting his intentions, but a God responding to real conditions, real intercession, and real delegated agency, all without ever moving from who he’s always been.

So the next time it looks like God changed his mind — about a prayer, a season, a door that closed after it seemed open — consider that the thing moving might be the situation, or you, and not him.

That’s actually the more stable place to stand. You’re not negotiating with someone unpredictable.

You’re in a relationship with someone whose character was settled before you got there, still responding to you in real time.

Keep bringing him the moment you’re in. He hasn’t gone anywhere.

If something can go wrong, it often does. I don’t think many of us are immune to feeling the effects of Murphy’s Law at some point in our lives.

Emergencies are bound to happen, which means we can plan for them. However, what do you do if you don’t have an emergency fund in place?

Many of us don’t earn enough to cover our monthly expenses. Attempting to operate inside a deficit like the US government is a trap.

Borrowing from Paul to pay Peter never fixes the problem. A short-term solution to a deep-rooted issue.

Here are 4 things you can do to begin to break this vicious cycle of living paycheck to paycheck.

Create a Budget

You will be surprised by how many people don’t have one. Some say a budget sounds like a restraint, but it brings freedom.

Budgeting removes the bliss of not knowing where your money is going. It removes the veil of am I wasting money on things that really don’t matter. It answers questions like, am I spending more money than income I have coming in?

A zero-sum budget is a blueprint of where you want your money to go. No one said not to plan for fun; create a line category for pocket money and entertainment. You have freedom because it’s your money, and ultimately you decide what matters to you.

Create Multiple Streams of Income

We live in a global economy with lots of opportunity to solve other people’s problems. There are passive and active ways to generate more cash flow.

Whether it’s picking up extra hours on a job or investing in cash-producing assets, you have options to escape living paycheck to paycheck.

When you produce income from multiple sources, you increase your financial stability.

Income from one source can cover expenses in another area when Murphy decides to show up. Seek out things that you are interested in.

There are always ways to make money from things that create value; you have to find out how.

Formulate a Long-Term Plan

It is impossible to end up where you want when you haven’t decided where you want to go.

A plan is a map towards your future. Sure, there are many twists and turns, but a plan gives you the ability to measure how far you are from what you desire.

A long-term perspective keeps minor setbacks and distractions out of focus.

It lets us adjust our plans when needed and empowers us to reach our goals. Living paycheck to paycheck doesn’t have to be a cycle you repeat forever.

Develop the Habit of Saving

The ant shows up in Proverbs 6:6-8 as the model for handling money wisely for a reason. No one has to remind the ant to gather food — it stores during the harvest so it has something to eat once winter comes.

It doesn’t wait until the shelves are empty to start planning. Joseph did the same thing on a national scale.

During Egypt’s seven years of abundance, he didn’t spend down to zero just because things were going well. He stored grain, because he knew the good season wouldn’t last forever — and it didn’t. The seven years of famine came right on schedule (Genesis 41).

Saving is really just paying your future self.

Perhaps that’s easier to see once it’s framed that way: every dollar set aside now is a dollar your future self won’t have to scramble for later.

And the amount matters less than you’d think. A few dollars a week feels small, but it’s building the habit, not the balance.

By the time more income shows up, the discipline will already be there, waiting for the money to catch up.

Breaking the Cycle

Living paycheck to paycheck isn’t a life sentence — it’s a pattern, and patterns can be broken. A budget answers the question of where your money is actually going.

Multiple streams of income give you room to move when Murphy shows up uninvited. A long-term plan reminds you that this month’s paycheck isn’t the final word on your financial story.

And the habit of saving, even in small amounts, means you’re already prepared for the season before it arrives.

None of these four things needs to be perfect to start.

Perhaps you don’t need a five-year plan today — perhaps you need to open a budgeting app, set aside your first five dollars, or ask what one skill you already have could become a second stream of income.

Real financial freedom isn’t about escaping bad things — they’re an unavoidable part of life. It’s about having options when the storms come, and less stress carrying you through them.

Getting there starts with stewarding what you already have, intentionally.

Throughout history, religious institutions have perpetuated a complex and often contradictory relationship with wealth and poverty.

While many religious leaders have preached the virtues of material deprivation, this perspective has sometimes served to consolidate institutional power rather than advance spiritual growth.

This examination challenges the historical glorification of poverty, particularly within religious contexts, and explores how certain interpretations of scripture and religious practices have been used to maintain economic disparities.

The weaponization of poverty as a means of control has deep historical roots, from ancient Greco-Roman religious traditions to medieval Christian practices.

By encouraging followers to embrace material deprivation while simultaneously amassing significant wealth within religious institutions, many religious authorities have created a paradoxical dynamic that deserves careful scrutiny.

The Catholic Church’s historical restrictions on Bible access, combined with its promotion of poverty as a virtue, illustrates how theological interpretations have been shaped to serve institutional interests.

This analysis does not suggest that poor individuals are themselves evil, but rather examines how poverty itself—and its deliberate promotion—has served as a tool of control and oppression.

By examining historical examples, religious texts, and institutional practices, we can better understand how the glorification of poverty has often worked against the very charitable principles that many religions, including Christianity, claim to uphold.

Understanding this history is crucial for addressing modern misconceptions about the relationship between spirituality and material wellbeing.

Poverty is Evil

This section explores the historical ways the church, culture, and religious leaders have weaponized having money.

They have emphasized encouraging followers of Jesus to be ignorant of the Biblical Scriptures. They have also persuaded millions of people throughout history that being poor is a good thing.

The church has used these teachings as a control tactic for many years, and as a result, the church has gotten richer while individual followers of Christ have gotten poorer.

To be clear, this section DOES NOT teach that poor people are evil. It teaches that poverty is evil.

For example, without money, the church or its followers cannot be the hands and feet of Jesus in the most basic ways, like providing a meal to someone who needs it.

Without the money to buy food or the resources to cook it, people will not live out the commands Jesus gave to help others (Matt 5:42; John 15:12; Acts 20:35).

Often, in Hebrew, words spelled backward mean the opposite. The word rich is one such example. Most people would think the opposite of rich is poor, but that is not the case.

In Hebrew, evil means the opposite of rich. The implication is that evil behaviors and things lead to poverty.

Greek and Roman Mythology

The Greco-Roman gods displayed no interest in the plight of people experiencing poverty. While Zeus Xenios protected strangers and Zeus Hiketêsios aided supplicants, no Zeus Ptôchios or other deity had an epithet denoting concern for people in need.

Instead, the rich were revered as the chosen ones in the divine realm, as their wealth served as tangible evidence of their favor. Unfortunately, the poor were at a disadvantage when seeking assistance from the gods because of their poverty.

This belief rested on the notion that the poor were morally inferior to the wealthy and often viewed as more susceptible to wrongdoing. As a result, people commonly attributed their poverty to their failings.

Certain Greek philosophers lived in voluntary poverty, but they prided themselves on being superior to the vulgar crowd.

There is no virtue in such poverty as this, and when Diogenes trampled Plato’s carpet, saying as he did so: “Thus do I trample on Plato’s pride,” “Yes,” answered Plato, “but only through your own pride.”

Buddhism also teaches the contempt of riches; in China, the tenth precept of the novices forbids them to touch gold or silver, and the second precept of female novices forbids them to possess anything of their own (cf. Wieger, “Bouddhisme chinois”, pp. 153, 155, 183, 185).

Penia, the Goddess of Poverty.

Penia, derived from the Greek word for deficiency or poverty, was the personification of destitution and need.

In Plato’s Symposium, she is part of a story by Socrates:

In the story, she finds Poros, the god of wealth, intoxicated from indulging in an excess of nectar; she finds solace in his embrace. Unbeknownst to her, this union gives birth to Eros, the god of love, embodying the perfect fusion of his parents’ essence, forever in need and forever in pursuit.

Despite being despised by many, she played a significant role in shaping cultural beliefs about poverty’s impact on society and the importance of humility and productivity.

In Aristophanes’ portrayal, Penia attempts to persuade two foolish men about the perils of widespread wealth. She argues that excessive affluence undermines motivation, leading to laziness and a decline in the production of goods.

According to her, a time will come when scarcity hampers purchasing power, forcing people to work harder for basic necessities.

While she acknowledges the resentment towards her, she also recognizes her crucial role in preserving humanity’s continuity.

Other ancient Greek writers, such as Alcaeus (Fragment 364), Theognis (Fragments 1, 267, 351, 649), Aristophanes (Plutus, 414ff), Herodotus, Plutarch (Life of Themistocles), and Philostratus (Life of Apollonius), also made mention of Penia.

24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Matt. 6:24)

During the Middle Ages, Mammon was often depicted as the embodiment of wealth and greed. He shares similarities with Plutus, the Greek god of wealth, and Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld.

Mammon likely drew inspiration from these figures, especially since Plutus appears in The Divine Comedy as a wolf-like demon representing wealth, and wolves were associated with greed during the Middle Ages.

According to Albert Barnes in his Notes on the New Testament, Mammon was a Syriac term for an idol worshipped as the deity of riches, much like Plutus was revered among the Greeks.

In modern times, Mammon is more commonly used to describe material wealth and excessive greed. It is often portrayed as an all-consuming force that can lead individuals to forsake their moral values and relationships in pursuit of monetary gain.

People have assumed that shunning wealth will somehow make them a better person. In reality, it is yielding to Christ and not other deities that allows us to obtain self-control. Jesus never said wealth is inherently evil, and the Bible does not say poverty is virtuous.

Vow of Poverty

The vow of poverty may generally be defined as the promise made to God of a certain constant renunciation of temporal goods, to follow Christ. The object of the vow of poverty is anything visible, material, and appreciable at a monetary value.

The vow of poverty is often compared to the virtue of poverty, but this is erroneous; for the object of virtue must be something honorable or praiseworthy in itself: now poverty has no intrinsic goodness.

Jean-Pierre Gury (a Catholic moral theologian) and many religious writers of his time held that poverty is good because it removes obstacles to the pursuit of spiritual perfection.

They did not believe poverty possessed inherent virtue (St. Thomas, “Contra Gentiles”, III, cxxxiii; Francisco Suárez, “De religione”, tr. VII, l. VIII, c. ii, n. 6; Bucceroni, “Inst. theol. mor.”, II, 75, n. 31).

Among those pursuing perfection, the spirit of poverty was initially shown by renouncing temporal possessions.

In community living, private ownership of goods was strictly forbidden, in line with the common life prescribed by monastic pioneers like St. Pachomius, Schénoudi, St. Basil, and St. Benedict.

However, there was no explicit vow of poverty at that time and no legal restrictions. Monastic profession only required a strict avoidance of unnecessary things. Justinian later passed a law stating that the possessions of religious should belong to the monastery.

This law gradually took effect, making it impossible to acquire property.

In the twelfth century, and even later, some religious individuals still owned property. The French law, which regarded religious individuals as civically dead, contributed to connecting the vow of poverty with the idea of disability.

The explicit vow of renouncing private property was introduced in the profession of the Friars Minor in 1260.

Around the same time, another change occurred. Up to that point, there had been no limit on the common possessions of religious, but the mendicant orders in the thirteenth century prohibited the possession, even in common, of any immovable property separate from the convent, as well as all revenues.

The Friars Minor of the strict observance even assigned ownership of all their property, including the most essential, to the Holy See.

Many founders, inspired by St. Francis and St. Dominic, established their orders on the principle of common poverty. The Church witnessed a significant increase in the number of mendicant orders until the foundation of the Clerics Regular in the sixteenth century.

Even then, many orders combined common poverty with the regular clerical life, such as the Theatines and the Society of Jesus. However, it became evident that this profession of poverty, which greatly edified the thirteenth century, was prone to serious abuses.

A state of destitution created more concerns than it alleviated and hindered intellectual activity and strict observance. Moreover, mendicancy could become scandalous. As a result, the Council of Trent allowed all monasteries, except the Friars Minor Observantines and the Capuchins, to possess immovable property and derive income from it.

Nevertheless, the Carmelites and the professed houses of the Society of Jesus continued to practice common poverty, which prohibited the possession of assured incomes. Congregations with simple vows were not bound by the canonical law that prohibited members from possessing or acquiring private property.

The incapacity for private possession was considered an effect of the solemn vow of poverty. Still, this connection between the incapacity to possess and the solemn vow is neither essential nor indissoluble.

The vow of poverty taken by the formed coadjutors of the Society of Jesus has the same effect on private possession as the solemn vow of the professed fathers.

St. Ignatius introduced a simple profession in his order as a preparation for the final one, with an interval between them during which the religious retained the capacity to possess property. A similar rule has been extended to all orders of men by Pius IX and to orders of women by Leo XIII.

On the other hand, since the Rescript of the Penitentiary of December 1, 1820, confirmed by the declaration to the bishops of Belgium dated July 31, 1878, the solemn profession of religious individuals in Belgium (and Holland, which appears to enjoy the same privilege) does not prevent them from acquiring, keeping, administering, or disposing of property.

However, in exercising these rights, they must observe the submission they owe to their legitimate superiors.

Additionally, the Holy See collects revenue from museum admissions and tours, as well as from the sale of highly sought-after stamps, coins, and publications.

Access to Scripture

Another significant factor perpetuating these unscriptural beliefs about poverty is the Church’s discouragement of independent Bible reading among the general population. This policy gained momentum during the Middle Ages and was further reinforced by a prohibition on translating the Bible into native languages.

The Council of Nicaea, convened by Emperor Constantine in 325 C.E., aimed to establish a unified Catholic Church. At the time, no universally accepted collection of Scriptures or Christian Bible existed.

Different churches and authorities adopted various texts and gospels. To address this, the Council of Hippo, in 393 C.E., sanctioned 27 books for the New Testament. Four years later, the Council of Carthage confirmed the same 27 books as the Church’s authoritative Scriptures.

Interestingly, the Church made considerable efforts to suppress competing gospels while also discouraging public access to Scripture.

Decree of the Council of Toulouse (1229 C.E.): “We prohibit also that the laity should be permitted to have the books of the Old or New Testament, but we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books.”

Ruling of the Council of Tarragona of 1234 C.E.: “No one may possess the books of the Old and New Testaments in the Romance language, and if anyone possesses them he must turn them over to the local bishop within eight days after the promulgation of this decree, so that they may be burned...”

Proclamations at the Ecumenical Council of Constance in 1415 C.E.: Oxford professor and theologian John Wycliffe was the first (1380 C.E.) to translate the New Testament into English to “...helpeth Christian men to study the Gospel in that tongue in which they know best Christ’s sentence.” For this “heresy,” Wycliffe was posthumously condemned by Arundel, the archbishop of Canterbury. By the Council’s decree, “Wycliffe’s bones were exhumed and publicly burned, and the ashes were thrown into the River Swift.”

Fate of William Tyndale in 1536 C.E.: William Tyndale was burned at the stake for translating the Bible into English. According to Tyndale, the Church forbids owning or reading the Bible to control and restrict the teachings and to enhance its own power and importance.

In contrast, Judaism had a different model. Dating back to the Exodus, Moses ordained public readings of the Torah, as noted by the Jewish Roman historian Flavius Josephus. This practice later became standard in synagogue services, where the Old Testament (Torah) is read over the course of a year, covering the entire Bible.

If the average person sees someone driving an expensive luxury car, they assume the person is wealthy, but the driver could be renting the car and doesn’t own it. Just because a person has a lot of stuff doesn’t automatically mean they have loads of money or are wealthy. Riches can give the impression of a status that a person doesn’t legitimately have.

Many warnings caution against riches because things aren’t always what they seem. It is wise not to envy people who have money because you don’t know what they had to go through to get it. It is where things go to die because nothing flows out for it to multiply. Saving is not bad, but once a savings account is depleted, it’s gone, and you must start over. It is more desirable to have a steady stream of cash flow with savings on the side that you rarely have to touch.

The Supernatural View

From a supernatural perspective, wealth is an unlimited pool of abundance fueled by creativity; it gives you the resources to live the life you want. The problem is that people lack awareness of the abundance around them. Once they become aware, they can make better-informed decisions. The only way to become rich (meaning to obtain more abundance) is to enrich the lives of others. Perhaps the real question isn’t how much you have, but how much of yourself you’re willing to pour into others — that’s where wealth actually begins.

When we align our conscious and subconscious mind, focus on faithful inputs rather than uncertain outcomes, and continually recalibrate with God’s heart, we discover peace and resilience that transcends our circumstances.

Goals = the harvest (desired outcome, uncertain)

James 1:22 reminds us: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Notice the emphasis on doing—on inputs rather than outcomes.
